Holy Crap, did somebody say Gluten???

Gluten Free, or GF, the big trend. Why? Health, inflammation, allergies,
and the big one: Celiac Disease. Is this a trend? Possibly, though probably
Not. As many folks are trying to be healthier, looking at their carb intakes,
feeling like the GMO monster is after them (with Good reason,) or just
simply due to an allergy or having Celiac there’s cause to understand
how restaurants are having to change. In West Asheville, it is probably
easier than most places in our country to be GF, GMO free, organic,
farm to table, vegetarian, vegan, or Paleo at our local eateries. For
example, if I’m at Biscuit Head and ask for a GF Biscuit, I’m asked
“is this allergy related or a preference.” Not very many small towns/cities
offer the sensitivity to specialized diets that West Asheville or even
Asheville provides.
A couple of years ago I was researching places to eat in Cleveland Ohio
for my brother, who happens to have Celiac. I was astonished at how
Few were listed on the National Celiac site, where in Asheville multiple
great restaurants were listed. Even our local grocery stores have been
and are better than many big cities for providing GF items.

So, when I’m about the town on the West Side and I want to stay GF, I’ve been
so pleased at the options I’ve found at places like Asheville Sandwich
Company, who offer a GF bun for all Sammie’s, and Buffalo Nickel who offers
a GF bun for their famous ~and my Favorite~ “Apple Brandy Burger with Cheddar foam
and onion jam.” Both alternative buns are, actually,Really great!  Barleycorn
has many options on their menu that are GF, and Paleo friendly, where
Bandidos and Zia Taqueria offer corn tortilla options and plates that are
GF, but not Paleo.
Biscuit Head does GF biscuits, but if you’re going to eat there: go for the
Gluten! Sunny Point, a personal fav, though we go there so infrequently due
to “anticipated” crowds; featured a GF Citrus Cornmeal Pancake which my
brother with Celiac Loved! After a brief hiatus on the menu, a Citrus
Cornmeal Waffle is now available; but best to talk to your
server and request Gluten Free. In terms of West Asheville Pizzerias:
both Standard Pizza and Favilla’s offer GF pizzas which I have not tried,
though both restaurants have amazing food. Favilla’s delivers, which is a
wonderful and easy option for locals or those staying with us in
West Asheville.
Bottom line, here, in W A’Ville, just Ask and tell your server what you
need. Better to be upfront than being pissed off later and posting on
social media.  (We are all too aware of where that leads….)
